You mean: for each file, call an external program, "give" him some specific info, catch a returned string and finally rename the file with it ?

May i give an hint rplr?

Of course you can ! That's what this forum is for.

To change file dates I sometime use Attributes Changer.
It is very effective but I am not sure that it can do what dgbear is looking for.

Hello,

Sorry but Siren changes only file names.
To achieve this task you will have to find another tool.

Hello,

You're right, this ID3 tag is not taken into account.

It seems to be "Part of Set" (TPOS ID3V2 ref).
What is the software you used to add this info and the exact name of the field it is associated to ?

In fact the audio tag list I chose was the one used by Winamp at that time.
This list surely needs to be enlarged. I'll think about this for a next version.

Thanks for the remark.

I'll have to think at this. Maybe will i add it in a future version.

Stefan, thanks a lot for this text !! (and all the others)

Maybe just a little thing: it can be useful to add the "/P" to the command line. If it is not present many elements will be kept in the ".ini" (directory, expression ...) and so reused the next time siren is started which can be annoying.

Hello,

For example 3) maybe this command will work:
siren /D C:\MyWebSides /T /F "*.html" /S "*" /A favorite /P /R /Q

I've added the "/P" because else all command line elements are saved in the ".ini" and so will be used during next siren's start.

This file list parameter can be interesting if the files to rename can't be easily "grouped" with a filter.
I'll think to it for a next version.

Thanks.

I note this suggestion. Thanks.

Hello,

As an expression can contain many regex and as "match" and "not match" can both be interesting results i am not sure to understand.

Thanks

It's a good idea. Maybe for future version.
Thanks.

I am not sure that the default file order returned by the system functions is constant.

I've already been asked to add a checksum variable.
But computing it on big files can take a while therefore some investigation has to be done for its integration.
If the checksum remains the same so should be the modification time.

Displaying in the status bar the expression text just as a standard help for a menu option is an interesting idea.
I'all add it.
Thanks.

I think you'll can use the "rename from list" feature. The problem will be to reestablish the right file order.
To "randomize" your file names maybe can you use the "%R" variable which is already available in the 1.90

Rapidly thinking, here is how i see things under the next version (2.00):
- First save the current directory's file names.
The problem here will be to retrieve the original file order for the rollback. As only renamings will be done maybe sorting the file list on the creation/modification date time can be an idea. Select the files and copy the names to the clipboard (Ctrl+Shift+P, like in the 1.90), paste in a text editor and save the file. "C:\test_flist.txt" for example.
- Make the needed tests
- Resort the file list following the original criteria
- Select the files and apply a rename expression like: %T{"C:\\test_flist.txt"}
(this is currently the syntax of the text file line extraction)

Another idea might be: depending on the length of your file list maybe could it be possible to transform it into an expression.

Hello,

I've just added the "copy" feature beside the "move" one of the 2.00.
It will be usable from command line too.

Thanks for this suggestion.

Hello Stefan,

A happy new year 2007 to you too !!

I think it can be done too using regular expressions but the length and complexity of the result should not be much better than the "replace chain".

I'll think to it for the version after the 2.00.

Thanks for this suggestion and all your posts !!

I've just made the modification.

Thanks for this suggestion.

Not a bad idea.
It surely has to be investigated.

Right now i must open the completion window, insert an parameter,

I don't really understand why you're doing all this.
Despite being movable and resizable the completion window is a modeless tool window.
This means that it will remain always on top while keeping Siren's main window accessible for all operations.
So you can open it, choose a variable, manually rework the expression, choose another variable ... etc ...

Did i understand your needs ?

I found it!
The sentence in the help " - During the writing of an expression:"
means execute this tips  while you are in the expression edit box! This means this box must have the focus. Just click in this box one time for that.

Writing help is a very heavy and delicate task ...

These key sequences (Ctrl+I, Ctrl+P) will change in the 2.00. A long time ago a user wrote me because he noticed the reverse: global key sequences like F5, Ctrl+R, Ctrl+K ... were not usable when one of the combos had the focus.
I've changed this and of course changed the specific "expression combo"'s ones.

In the 2.00 version, the expression syntax will evolve a bit and especially on this point.
It will be possible to "chain" sub-expressions by separating them with ";".
This will help solving the cases where many steps were needed like this one in dpreview's forum.

For now adding "external" code like other favorites is not supported.
Maybe in a future version.

i have to use
%b( "FinD","replace" ,1,99,1 ).%e

(99 to find all)

You can replace "99" with "-1" which means "all remaining occurences".

If not i wanna suggest to allow empty parameter but wrote comas only like ,,,1
If it not to many work to implement this!

Syntactically it disturbs me a bit but maybe are you right.
I note this point in my "todo" list.

Thanks.

Thanks for these tips !

But Siren only marks the first 389 files as selected (depended on the file length?)
from 550 that are selected in TCMD ( ~ 4096kB/chars ? )

Maybe Siren has here an limit?
But what ever, this should be enough for daily work, isn't it? ;-)

There is no particular reason for Siren to be responsible here but I'll have a look at this issue.

Maybe an interesting idea would be to rename directly from TCMD using Siren's command line parameters: /A, /P, /R and /Q

Thanks for an great renaming tool rplr! big_smile

Thanks to you for sharing your knowledge !
